Wolves In The Throne Room - Celestite 2014-FNT

MUSiC, Album. July 19, 2014 by Anonymous.

Here's a really trippy instrumental and mostly synthesizer companion CD to their 2011 release, "Celestial Lineage". I played them together and it was brilliant.

On the incredible 'Celestite', Olympia, Washington's forest-dwelling Weaver siblings, aka Wolves In The Throne Room, synthesise a majestically stark follow-up to the cosmic turmoil of 'Celestial Lineage' . Whilst traces of the Weavers' archetypal guitars are still present, they're largely superseded by an array of synths played by themselves and by Seattle's darkside se'ers Randall Dunn (Earth, Sunn 0))), Master Musicians of Bukkake) and Timm Mason, plus additional instrumentation by Steve Moore, among others. Yielding five earthly meditations rent with radiant Serge Modular synth tones and H3000 harmonizer, it feels closer to a sci-fi or horror soundtrack than most black metal record we've heard previously, or beyond the intro's at least, with a yearning, transcendent spirit that echoes classics from Coil, Iasos or Popol Vuh as much as Darkthrone and the intent and functions of the sub-genre proper. Between the web of arcane horns, arcing guitars and glistening synths in opening highlight, 'Turning Ever Towards the Sun', and the widescreen peaks of crystalline synth plumes and black hole bass in 'Celestite Mirror', it's a breathtaking achievement of the sort which reaffirms your faith in the transportive power of music, and particularly electronic synth music. Highly recommended.
