IMAX - Alaska: Spirit of the Wild (1997)
English | Subtitle: English | BluRay 720p x264-HDBRiSe | MKV | AVC 1280x704 4694Kbps 24fps | AC3 448Kbps 6Ch 48KHz | 00:40:34 | 1.46GB
Whether or not we reach Alaska, we all want to know that such a place exists" - and it seems almost impossible that such a place does exist. Humpback whales, Wolves, Salmon, Buffalo, Musk Ox, Bears, Sea lions, Caribou, Bald Eagles, Polar Bears, Moose and Man - just a few of the stars of ALASKA. The variety of life in Alaska is overwhelming - enough to provide material for a score of Big Movies (in fact, it has.) In ALASKA, director George Casey shows real grace whether depicting Humpback whales on a herring hunt or Natives on a whale hunt. The film conveys a consistent spirit of awe and curiosity. Thankfully, ALASKA is not a laundry list of spectacular animals - but a tribute to one of nature's last purely wild landscapes. Survival is the deceptively straightforward theme - strategies for braving Alaska's extremes and reaping its riches link and distinguish all forms of life here. ALASKA sets the standard for Large Format nature documentaries - too many of which are episodic, derivative and thematically cobbled together. ALASKA's science is broad, but its best lessons are not meant to be of the classroom variety - sheer exposure to raw and beautiful nature is the point.

Extraordinary panoramic vistas, taken from a 2-engine plane with a camera attached to its nose, amazing geological facts, and marvelous animals, most of them unique to Australia, are what we get in this superb documentary of what is both the world's smallest continent, and its largest island. Once joined to Antarctica many millions of years ago, with high mountains and lush forests, time transformed Australia into 3 million square miles of mostly arid flat land, and its creatures adapted to the different weather conditions. Fabulous and often amusing footage of kangaroos and koalas (both share the same ancestral marsupial possum), as well as desert creatures from ants to the giant and fearsome parenti lizard, and the "living contradiction," the platypus, are among the many delights shown in this film. An event that only occurs approximately twice every century, torrential rains filling the Outback's Lake Eyre, bringing long dormant animals to life, as well as flocks of pelicans, is caught on film, and is a spectacular sight. This is a glorious but harsh land, with a strange beauty that fills the soul. Australia is described as being more like another planet than another country, and this documentary has many images rarely seen. Directed by David Flatman, written by Flatman, Meg Morrison, and poet Les Murray, it is narrated by Alex Scott, and has a lovely score by David Bridie. Made for IMAX in 2002, every aspect of "Australia, Land Beyond Time" is excellent, is a must for anyone interested in this great country, and those of us who like to explore foreign lands without leaving home.

IMAX - Cosmic Voyage (1996)
English | Blu-ray 720p AC3-HDBRiSe | MKV | AVC 1280x720 4773Kbps 23.976fps | AC3 640Kbps 6Ch 48KHz | 00:36:09 | 1.37GB
This is one of the best IMAX films, narrated by Morgan Freeman. It is truly a Cosmic Voyage, it gives an idea about the truth size of our macro and micro universe. It manages to maintain the interest by avoiding any difficult data, the ones told are clear and suitable even for younger audience. And I believe it contains information even for the educated people. It is needless to talk about the visuals. The IMAX films always had great footage and effects, this is true for this also one. But unlike to some IMAX films where only the visuals stand out, here the narration and contents are also very good. Morgan Freeman's calm narrative voice makes you to really wonder about the contents.
IMAX - Deep Sea (2006)

The wondrous denizens of the diverse marine habitat known as a coral reef are the subject matter of Howard Hill's DEEP SEA 3-D (originally an IMAX presentation). Exploring the reefs throughout the Pacific, Hill's cameras capture a rare close-up glimpse of turtles, shrimp, scallops, sharks, eels, starfish, jellyfish, octopuses, and much more. Thematically, the film examines the balance of life and symbiosis between these creatures. There are the hunters and the hunted, yet there is always another species that keeps the hunters in check, too. Similarly, some species of smaller fish eat by feeding on sea material that collects on some larger fish, which also cleans the larger fish's scales. The continued and necessary persistence of this activity is quite important to the collective survival of the animals, the reef and, indeed, all of humanity. Narrated almost conversationally by Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet, DEEP SEA 3-D is a thrilling, intimate, and educational look at the unknown depths of the world underwater; enjoyable for kids and adults of any age

Believe it or not, an IMAX film can make the transition to video perfectly well. It might not be three stories tall, but Dolphinsis still a lovely, larger-than-life exploration of these strangelyintelligent creatures. Visit the Bahamas, Argentina, and beyond to seedifferent varieties (like the graceful duskies) play and hunt. PierceBrosnan's narration and Sting's music fill the water with sound and addcounterpoint to the dolphin's shrill cries; the film is an overwhelmingexperience even in the living room. Two short features follow the mainattraction: see behind-the-scenes footage of the making of Dolphinsas the enormous IMAX camera follows the sleek, gorgeous beasts, andlearn some hard facts about marine science including how dolphins fitinto their complex environment and why their numbers are at risk. Fewnature films bear repeat viewing as well as this one--new details leapout at the audience each time.

IMAX - Hurricane on the Bayou (2006)

Awfully hot sun in downtown New Orleans and it was only right that a cold, dark IMAX theatre was waiting for me. The new film Hurricane on the Bayou premiered here this week. It features the always-stunning IMAX photography of southern Louisiana -- both before and after Katrina. The idea was to do a film about the disappearing wetlands, and that first section opens happily with underwater shots of alligators and "Iko Iko" on the music track. Meryl Streep is the narrator and she explains how New Orleans was once sheltered by 1000 square miles of disappearing wetlands. Silt from the Mississippi replenished the marsh areas, but after levees were built to stop flooding, those muddy waters went out into the Gulf. Then, in the film, Katrina hits. This is done mostly with special effects and news footage, followed by huge spanning views (taken from a helicopter) of the rising water… and the victims. The filmmakers stay with their theme and away from the issues of rescue and recovery. It is a bit contrived and stagy, but the music's nice and the images memorable. And the actual hurricane certainly pays off the premise.

IMAX - The Dream Is Alive (1985)
English | Subtitle: English, French, Spanish | BluRay 720p x264-HDBRiSe | MKV | AVC 1280x720 5064Kbps 23.976fps | AC3 64-Kbps 6Ch 48KHz | 00:36:34 | 1.46GB
To date, NASA has made five IMAX films that have been shot from the Space Shuttle or the Space Station. "The Dream is Alive" was the first, and is probably still the best. It must be seen on the IMAX screen to fully appreciate it, but still looks and sounds good on DVD if seen on a big television with a good sound system. The launch sequences would be excellent opportunities for audiophiles to display their subwoofers to admiring guests. Considering that all of the film shot in space was shot by the shuttle crews rather than by professional cameramen, the results are outstanding. This is probably the closest you can get to the sensation of being in space, short of actually going there yourself. There are also excellent ground sequences of the shuttles being assembled, launched, and recovered, along with the training required for astronaut candidates G?? all well chosen to look dramatic in the IMAX format. The three shuttle missions featured in this film all took place during 1984, and the film was released in the summer of 1985. At the time it was released, NASA was launching shuttle missions at a rate never seen before or since. The film displayed the optimism of the time, where the safety of the flights was not in question, and the goal of everyone flying in space someday seemed to be within reach. NASA had a teacher-in-space program and a journalist-in-space program (as well as an unofficial politician-in-space program, where a congressman and a senator conned their way into space flights), and an ambitious program of fifteen launches was scheduled for 1986. Everything looked rosy, and the film reflects this. Then, on the first (and only) shuttle launch of 1986, Challenger exploded, killing the crew of seven (including two of this film's cast). The previous optimism vanished, never to fully return, in the light of revelations about unresolved safety issues, unrealistic expectations, etc. The film is thus an artifact of this vanished era, and it's rather sad to see this atmosphere of optimism in the light of what was to follow. Nonetheless, the sequences in the movie are still very effective, and the subsequent IMAX space films have only managed to equal (but not exceed) what is seen here. If you're a space enthusiast, you owe it to yourself to see this at least once in an IMAX theater.

Swim with thousands of golden jellyfish and witness the bizarre spawning behavior of giant clams. Surf in Hawaii, deep-sea dive in Palau and test your courage with the Coast Guard in some of the world's roughest seas! Follow a remotely operated vehicle 3,000 feet down through the ocean depths to view strange creatures (one as long as a football field!) which live where sunlight never penetrates. "The Living Sea" celebrates the "world ocean"--its beauty, diversity and importance to all life on earth. Music by Sting; narrated by Meryl Streep. Ever wonder "how did they do that?" "The Making of 'The Living Sea'" (37 min.), shot in High-Definition Video, takes you behind the scenes.
