Ennobling and uplifting, Happiness of Us Alone is a moving portrayal of a deaf couple and their resilience in dealing with life’s harsh realities. Spanning 15 years as Japan rose from the ashes of World War II, the film takes a sympathetic yet sober look at the themes of disability, poverty, prejudice, and family, from the perspective of Michio and Akiko.
On their first date at a zoo with no animals, Michio suddenly proposes to a surprised Akiko. She turns him down. An incident soon after causes her to reconsider, as she realizes they need each other in order to survive. But hardship is just around the corner for them.
Based on a true story, the screenplay is written by veteran screenwriter Zenzo Matsuyama who makes his debut as director. Powerful performances by Hideko Takamine as Akiko, and Keiju Kobayashi as Michio.
Director Yoji Yamada (Otoko wa Tsurai yo series) selected Happiness of Us Alone to his all-time top 50 dramatic film list. Of Michio and Akiko’s first date scene, Yamada calls it one of the most beautiful love scenes in Japanese cinematic history.
