Full version, eh? Well, it's not the album, or even a different song... but it IS more Earl and for that I am thankful.
Earl Sweatshirt - Chum
MP3 V0 VBR
1. Chum (Explicit)
2. Chum (Clean)
"I hope i lose you as a fan if you only fuck with me because i rapped about raping girls when i was 15." That nugget came from Earl Sweatshirt back in August, when the no-longer-missing-in-action rapping wünderkind took to Twitter to detail his forthcoming follow-up to 2010's mesmerizing, occasionally repulsive EARL. It's unclear as of yet whether this new song, "Chum", will appear on his new record, but it certainly finds him in an introspective mood that's more "Luper" than it is "epaR".
He unspools in-the-moment thoughts on his absent father ("Honestly, I miss this nigga like when I was six"), his relationship with his mother ("Mama often was offering peace offerings/ Think, wheeze cough, scoffin' and 'He's off again'") and growing up while dealing with issues of identity ("Too black for the white kids/ And too white for the blacks"). He delivers these missives over a tumbling piano loop with low, fuzzy bass that anyone familiar with Odd Future's early work would recognize as in-house production-- only, this isn't a regression. It's someone growing into their lyrical talents as they grow up in real time, and it's more than enough to keep listeners wondering what's next.
