Chris Young - Neon [2011]

Chris Young’s new 10-track project is tightly packed with solid songs, honoring both family and desires of the flesh. The album opens with “I Can Take It From There,” a possible successor to Chris’ 2009 No. 1 hit “Gettin’ You Home (The Black Dress Song),” and later Chris gives some do-gooder advice on “Save Water, Drink Beer.”

From the opening note of the first single, “Tomorrow,” Chris’ rich baritone establishes him as an instantly recognizable singer in the vein of Josh Turner, Alan Jackson or Keith Whitley. “Neon,” with its vivid imagery and neo-traditional honky-tonk feel, is George Strait-worthy material and features one of the album’s more interesting rhymes, pairing a little Johnny Lee on and the buzz I want to be on.

Chris turns more sentimental on the second half of the disc, paying homage to good advice from his father and grandfather, respectively, on the poignant “Flashlight” and “Old Love Feels New,” and closes the set with the gorgeous romantic string-and-piano ballad “She’s Got This Thing About Her.”
